Module 1: INTERNET TOOLS

I have seen computers pinged get an IP (Internet Protocol) address before. In fact, from memory, there is an IP address for other hardware connected to computers such as routers etc.
This task was the easiest of all 3.
I logged on to CentralOps.net (supplied by Curtin Uni) and typed 'curtin.edu.au in the 'domain or IP address' box.
It took approx 245 milliseconds for the trace to be complete. The trace went via 22 hops and the final IP address was similar (except for 2 numbers) to the multiple choice answers. (image on left) I had also read on the discussion board from other students of similar differences.
The second time, I used another web site called www.nwtools.com. with similar results and less hops. Still the same IP address.(image on right)
There was a difference in times and number of hops on two different web sites for the same task.
Both showed - IP Address: 134.7.134.47
(www.Centralops.net)-Time: 245ms Hops: 22 hops (image on left)
(www.nwtools.com)-Time: 243.2ms Hops: 10 hops (image on right)

Module 1: FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

I have seen this 'FTP' thing while setting up my internet - I think!
I logged into FTPplanet.com (supplied by Curtin Uni) and read the begiinners guide and followed procedure.
In the URL box - ftp://recall.curtin.edu.au/
I just opened files - some of which denied access. Then I saw the 'readme.txt' file. It was not hard to get the answer, but what is FTP?
I did a Google search on FTP and.....still reading!!

FIRST DAY

NET11
As usual, I was lost on my first 'log-in', however it all started to make sense pretty quickly. Reading other posts from students and staff helps a lot when you start the subject - especially if you are new to the 'Open Learning' concept.
I think that the posts and comments from everyone should be read thoroughly and understood. It is overwhelming because of the number of discussions that have to be read - especially for a person like me who only logs on in the evening. I tend to try and read the student discussions quickly to get to the next task - not a good idea! Read slowly, understand and move on...
